Our old seed bull, Ike has gone to chomp on the great pasture in the sky. He had a wonderful time here at Miles Smith Farm. He was over 9 years old, and was very upset that Tundra had taken over his position; now we feel he is much happier. Ike is the bull featured in the farm logo - a Gene Matras drawing.
Meanwhile, we have 6 new head of cattle from Gary's Clover Ridge Farm. They are yearlings and will be with us through the winter. In the coming weeks, we'll have about 20 more head joining them.

Bruce and Carole attended Animal Power Field Days in Tunbridge Vermont on September 28, 2008. This event featured animal powered farm equipment with demonstrations including haying and plowing and "celebrated renewable land-use practices that advance the cultural web of our local communities."
See some of the activities here.

The Scottish Highland Games were held at Loon Mountain Sept 19-21, 2008. Carole, Bruce, Paddy and Sabrena made the trek to Lincoln NH to participate in the last day of the festivities. There were no Scottish Highlander cattle in attendance but the day was beautiful, the music lively and the dancing spectactular.

An important part of farming is providing hay so the animals have feed during the winter. On Sept 5th, 2008 Carole and Bruce worked with Gary Dashner to bale hay. It was a cool beautiful summer day but don't let the weather fool you - this is hard work.
See the pictures here. If you don't see Carole throwing hay - she was there and did contribute to the process...sort of.

Kathleen Hatt wrote an article about the farm that was published in the September issue of Farming Magazine.
You can read the article here. Not only will you see our cattle, you'll get to see a picture of Bruce and me!

The New Hampshire TV crew for WMUR which produces the "Chronicle New Hampshire" shows spent 3 1/2 hours on the farm to film a section that will air at the end of September. Local historians Bob Ordway, Muriel Burr and John Plummer and his wife Ann showed up to help support the effort.
John Plummer, Wanda Banks and Carole Soule were interviewed and Bruce Dawson wrangled the cattle for the camera. All the cattle were very cooperative (and picturesque). And we learned a lot about Miles Smith's neighbors. John Plummer's grandmother, Mary Ella Sargent was 6 when Miles Smith died and told stories to John's mother about the farm.
See pictures here of the filming. We'll let you know when you can see the finished product on TV.

Today was a very sad day for Miles Smith Farm. We said an unexpected "Good bye" to a long time farm resident, Sally. Sally was an Appaloosa mare who lived here on the farm for at least 15 of her 40 years.
She was a faithful and kind hearted horse who taught many beginers how to ride. She had colic (twisted bowel) and we were able to put her down before she suffered much pain. All of the people here on the farm will miss her but most of all her stall mate, Magic, will miss her the most.
Good luck and happy trails to you Sally. We will miss you very much.

Saturday was a very sad day for Carole. She took Spin and her foal, Raleigh, to Jest A Bit Farm in Pepperell, Mass where Raleigh will be weaned. Weaning is when the foal is separated from the mother. Then Spin will come home and Raleigh will stay in Pepperell to be sold.
While Spin is away we moved a cow and her new born calf into the barn to keep an eye on the calf. So if you are checking the Web cam - don't think Spin grew horns and Raleigh lost his spots. Spin may sometimes "act" like a cow but the animal you see is really a Scottish Highlander cow, Cocoa, with her 2 day old calf, Puff.
Next week we are taking Snap (Spin's first born) to Jest a Bit Farm to sell him also. Snap has been in training at Driftwood Farm in Northwood, NH. He has been "backed" (can carry a rider) and will be sold "green broke." Selling these two horses is very sad for Carole but both Snap and Raleigh are very talented boys and will make some equestrians very happy owners. And besides now we have lots of cows and calves to play with!

This afternoon's strike took out our well pump. Looks like we'll be hand pumping the water for all the cattle and horses.
Does anyone know where to get a submersible motor controller on a Saturday night or Sunday? (Our local hardware store doesn't carry them.)
