Raleigh's first trim
Horses and Donkeys On May 14, 2008 Raleigh (3 weeks old) got his first trim from Bethany Polston. Raleigh was quite patient-with a little encouragement from his mom, the steady hand of Josh Chagnon and the watchful eye of Bethany's dog.

See all the pictures here.

2008 Kentucky Derby Party - Great Time
The Kentucky Derby and Horse Racing. A great time was had by all who came; our condolences to the owners and fans of Eight Bells. Here are the pictures - courtesy of Janet Levy.

This year, 25+ people ignored the weather (rainy and cold) and came to our Derby Party. The food was wonderful, featuring Derby Pie, Burgoo, Southern Comfort Chocolate Mousse Pie, our own farm raised beef, homemade strawberry ice cream, and lots of other things that were gone before I could taste them! (The downside of being a host.)

The horses and cows had a few visitors, but it was too "inclimate" for them to put on a show. (And snickers really wanted to show how she won that race at the track.)

Raleigh is One Day Old
Horses and Donkeys Today, we turned out Raleigh and his mom into the 10 acre field. This was Raleigh's first run and he kept up with Spin, his mom. Spin was excited to be outside and free of her huge belly. They both loved the beautiful day. Check out all the pictures here.

Welcome to Raleigh (aka "Roll")
Horses and Donkeys Raleigh, (also known as "Roll" - to match Spin and Snap's names) was born today around 11am in the barnyard. We're sorry it didn't appear in the webcam, but we didn't have much control - the mare was outside when the delivery started.

Of course, there are pictures (these are from the webcam.) More pictures are here - taken by Carole.

Whoa! SpinCam/StallCam Overloaded
On the Farm The camera with the pregnant mare is getting severely overloaded - along with our network connection.

Please, please use it only for short periods of time (a minute or less). And close the browser window when you're done.

We'll appreciate it, other viewers will appreciate it, and most of all, the camera will appreciate it!

Oversize Load
Horses and Donkeys April 15, 2008 - For those of you watching the Web cam you would have noticed the Oversize Load sign in Spin's stall. Martin Charette found the sign on the road and we decided it pretty much summed up Spin's ordeal.

April 16, 2008 - Spin is now 3 days overdue but we are all hoping for a foal soon...Spin MOST of all!

April 17, 2008 - Still waiting.

Donna Peck, the vet, just left. Spin got a shot to encourage the foal to send out hormones to get the birthing started. We should have a baby before 72 hours (Saturday morning) if not before!

April 20, 2008 - No baby yet. Still waiting and hoping today will be the big day! Donna Peck, our vet, stopped by at 4pm to help "move" the birthing along with an exam. We should know in the next few hours if this tactic works.

April 21, 2008 - Another night has gone by. Carole slept in the barn on foal watch - but there is still no foal....

April 22, 2008 - The foal arrived. We have named him "Raleigh" and his barn name will be "Roll". He is a beautiful paint. Spin is being the perfect mother! Watch for pictures soon!

Bale of Hay Escapes
Cattle Tales A few weeks ago, back during the Ice Age, we fed the cattle a 4x4 bailage. (Bailage is wrapped hay, designed to ferment and increase its nutrient level). The cattle love this stuff - they seem to think its wine and bread wrapped into one big juicy meal. These are big round bales, weighing between 800 to 1200 lbs each. It usually takes the herd about 3 days to polish one off.

Well, the day after we fed it to them, it disappeared. We were puzzled, but gave them another one, thinking they were especially hungry for some reason.

Today, while fixing fences, I found it. I was a bit puzzled by the break in a fence. Usually there are lots of hoof prints and one wire (the top wire) is stretched way out. But this break took out the fence at several insulators and both strands were out. I did notice a trail of hay leading down the hill and after following it, found the bale.

Evidently one of the bulls got the bale turned over so it would roll. And then proceeded to roll it down the hill. (He must've been very bored.)

Now I have to figure out how to get the tractor down there to retrieve what's left of it. Sigh.

Cattle Sorted and Moved
Cattle Tales Just for those following these things... We've resorted the cattle so that most of the "boys" (bulls and steers) are in the Equitation Field (visible from the NorthCam and the left of the SouthCam). And the girls are all in the Omega Field (not visible from a camera just yet).

This was done to prevent any winter births. The girls have settled in quite nicely. The boys are a noisy bunch and are still showing off their muscles to each other. (I think the steers would prefer if the bulls would leave them alone.)

We are now expecting 6 bouncing calves in the next month or so. I hope the fences hold up.

Foal Alert
Horses and Donkeys Spin is due to give birth to a foal on April 13, 2008 - yes that is tomorrow, Sunday. She is very uncomfortable as you can see.

Here is a look at Spin and her stud Prince on a happy May day in 2007. See all the pictures of Spin and watch here for pictures of the foal that is due any day now!.
