Wednesday night (July 1) we had two calves born. One made it and is doing well. The other didn't make it (prolonged breech birth). We have not yet named the calf that made it.

We finished the On-Farm Construction Workshop presented by Dr. Stan Weeks, Mike Lynch, and John Porter. This was at the farm, and they didn't advertise all the mistakes we made!
It was a great workshop, attended by about 25 people, covering numerous aspects of the occasional on-farm building projects and associated technologies. Our farm was an example several best-practices principles.

Bruce's standard response to people noting all the colors of Scottish Highlanders is: "They come in every color except purple" - and then he goes on about "even green - due to algae in the pond".
Well, Cocoa and Tundra produced a purple calf yesterday. Cocoa is a "dun" color, and Tundra was a "silver" color. The calf was a bit distressed and not feeding, but Carole managed to train it to find the teat, and it seems to have caught on. Otherwise, its a large calf and otherwise doing well.
The color is not a "true blue", but sort of a soft brown blue. But the blue tint is unmistakable.
We'll post pictures and update this article with a link when we think mother and daughter can withstand a flashbulb.

After doing last year's books and talking to our partner farmers, we finally decided to start making our own hay. We bought a Round Baler, a Bale Wrapper, and a Hay Mower recently, and finally got them all working this past weekend. Pictures are here.

Courtsey of Bruce White, we have more pictures of our early spring, also known as mud season.
In spite of what the caption says, these were taken on March 18, 2009.

We just hosted our last annual Kentucky Derby party. It was "a blast", if you'll pardon me dating myself. There was lots of very yummy food (thanks to all who attended), and an interesting hay ride afterwards where everyone got to spend time in the middle of a herd of Scottish Highlander cattle.
Wasn't the winning horse "Mine that Bird" a great one? 50-1 odds. I wonder if he'll go to the Belmont and Preakness?
Pictures are here! (Courtesy of Bruce White)

We've had 4 calves so far this year (Teegan, Flank Steak, Molly, and the one that didn't make it). Plus we have 2 young new bulls from White Gate Farm in Epping, NH: Painless and Rump Roast. We'll post the link to pictures when I can find them.
We're expecting a lot more calves, but we're not sure when they'll arrive; maybe after Derby Day.

After many, many months, we finally got notification that Miles Smith Farm is a registered trademark. This means we can now put a 'circle-R' (®) after the name, and it will be legally protected!

I think the cattle are finally getting tired of "spring" (we call it "mud season"). You can tell by the slow sucking sound they (and us) make as we plow across the barnyard at feeding time.
The new calf still likes spring, but she is romping around in the covered feed bunker - which has its floor covered with hay. I think the other calves are staying "in the oven" until the mud clears out.

Mud season is here! We have about 5 inches of white furry stuff on top of all our mud. Usually the mud freezes solid when this happens, but not today!
Needless to say, the farm is a white and brown mess today.
